How Silhouet-Tone electrolysis works

We explain in plain language what happens in the hair follicle during treatment. This section is useful for anyone starting out in electrolysis or choosing their first device.

Three methods

Thermolysis, electrolysis and blend

In all three methods the probe (needle) enters the natural follicle opening, along the hair, without piercing the skin. They differ in which current destroys the cells responsible for hair growth.

High-frequency (HF) current

Thermolysis

Current oscillating millions of times per second moves the water molecules around the probe. Friction creates heat that coagulates the tissue at the base of the follicle in a fraction of a second.

Pros
The fastest method. A pulse lasts a fraction of a second, so you remove the most hair per visit.
When
Very fine, fine and medium, shallow hair. The default method when the device is switched on.
Direct (galvanic) current

Electrolysis

Direct current triggers a chemical reaction in the follicle: water and salt in the tissue form sodium hydroxide, known as lye. The lye dissolves the hair’s growth cells.

Pros
Very precise and effective in difficult cases. Lye reaches where heat does not always get to.
When
Coarse and resistant hair. Slower than thermolysis, which is why Silhouet-Tone devices offer it in manual mode (current 0–3 mA).
HF + direct current together

Blend

Both currents flow during a single probe insertion. Direct current produces lye, and heat from thermolysis warms it and speeds it up. Warm lye spreads throughout the follicle.

Pros
The speed of thermolysis combined with the effectiveness of electrolysis.
When
Hair from medium thickness upwards: coarse, deep, curly and distorted.

MC vector modulation

To reduce pain, traditional devices switch the current on and off (ON/OFF mode). This is felt as pulsing, and during the breaks no energy reaches the follicle, so the treatment is less effective.

MC vector modulation works differently. Current flows without breaks, and the device continuously adjusts its intensity and timing in segments of about 2 milliseconds on average. As a result, energy at the base of the follicle stays constant, and the skin does not feel the typical “sting” of pulses.

  • Less painNo jerky pulsing of current, even with repeated pulses.
  • EffectivenessConstant energy destroys the growth cells deep and at the sides of the follicle.
  • Every hairFrom very fine to extremely coarse, curved and curly, without damaging surrounding tissue.

Flash modes: how they differ

“Flash” is the way the device delivers heat in a single pulse. The modes differ in how long current flows in the follicle and how the heat spreads. EVO X HD selects the mode itself, based on the chosen area and hair thickness.

Super Flash

A very short and highly concentrated pulse. Heat stays at the very tip of the probe.

In practice: the fastest work, fine and shallow hair.

Flash

A fast, precise pulse that ensures effective coagulation of the tissue at the base of the follicle.

In practice: a versatile mode for most face and body areas.

Slow Flash

Longer action at gentler power. Heat spreads wider in the follicle.

In practice: coarser, deeper hair, wider follicles.

Pulse Flash

Energy delivered in a series of short bursts. Gives control over the heat and more comfort during treatment.

In practice: sensitive areas and situations where comfort matters.

Important for beginners: you do not have to choose the mode yourself. Once you select the area (e.g. chin) and hair thickness, the device sets the mode, frequency, power and time. You can change them at any moment, and in our training we teach when it is worth doing so.

Blend step by step

What happens in the follicle during blend

  1. Probe insertionThe probe goes along the hair to the base of the follicle. The person being treated is in contact with the return electrode, which closes the direct-current circuit.
  2. Lye is formedDirect current turns water and salt in the tissue into sodium hydroxide (lye), which begins to dissolve the growth cells.
  3. Heat speeds it upHF current warms the lye. Warm lye works faster and also reaches the curves and sides of the follicle.
  4. The hair slides outAfter the pulse, the hair slides out with tweezers without resistance, often with a visible sheath.
EVO X HD: 4 blend variantsShort, Soft, Pulsed and Uni Blend. The device selects the variant automatically for the area and hair thickness.
Lye counter on the device screenDuring blend, the EVO X HD touchscreen shows how many lye units the direct current produced in the follicle. This shows you how much chemical energy reached the hair and makes it easier to repeat effective settings.
From medium hair thicknessThe Blend button appears for medium, coarse and very coarse hair. On EVO X HD also for extra coarse.
Glossary

Terms worth knowing

Hair follicle
The small canal in the skin where the hair grows. This is where the probe is inserted.
Dermal papilla
Cells at the base of the follicle that nourish the hair. Destroying them gives a permanent result.
Hair growth phases
Anagen (growth), catagen (transition) and telogen (rest). Electrolysis works in every phase. It gives the fastest results in telogen: when hair has not been removed for about 4 months, 5–6 treatments are often enough.
Insulated probe
A probe with micron-thin insulation that protects the skin surface. Used for thermolysis, not for electrolysis or blend.
Return electrode
The element the person being treated is in contact with during electrolysis and blend. It closes the direct-current circuit.
Hydration test
An EVO X HD measurement on a 0–100% scale. Hydrated skin: higher power and shorter time. Dry skin: longer time and lower power.
Ana- and cataphoresis
Gentle currents before treatment (skin preparation) and after it (soothing and tightening pores).
Paradoxical regrowth
Thicker, denser hair around areas treated with laser or IPL. EVO X HD has a dedicated programme for it.
